Baby Ben's Favorite Reads

Baby Ben enjoys story time at the library last summer.


I recently got to visit with Baby Ben (aka Benny). I was pleased to discover that at the age of 10 months, he is into books big time! In fact, he spent a lot of time on that day looking at books, being read to, and chewing on his favorite bath tub book.


Here are Baby Ben's favorites (as of now).

Brown Bear, Brown Bear by Bill Martin. This classic is written in rhyme and tells the story of a variety of animals and what they see. Benny loves the rhythm of this one.

Good Night Moon, by Margaret Wise Brown. A little bunny bids good night to all the objects in his room before falling asleep. This book is also written in rhyme and Benny enjoys the rhythm of this one as well.

Are You My Mother, by P.D. Eastman.  In this story, a little bird falls from the nest and begins a search for his mother. He asks a variety of animals and objects the same question, "Are you my mother?"  The repetition of the question creates a nice rhythm, according to Baby Ben.

The Foot Book by Dr. Seuss. As everyone knows Dr. Seuss was into rhyming. That probably goes without saying. This book describes feet doing all kinds of things, walking, dancing, skating, etc. With limited prose and colorful characters this book also creates a rhythm that catches Baby Ben's attention.

In case you haven't caught on, Baby Ben is captivated by the sound and rhythm of words. He is also building a large vocabulary, although he doesn't know that right now. He is also getting a head start on learning to read, something else that he doesn't realize right now.  But fortunately for Baby Ben, his parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins do realize that reading, even to a very young child, is of the utmost importance!

Maurice Sendak is Benny's all time favorite.  He even dressed up as Max for Halloween!  Now that's a boy after his great aunt's heart because that book also happens to be my all time favorite!!

  "The basket" "Loose parts" Read on for more information! It's been awhile but I'm back! First let me start with sending out my heartfelt thanks to teachers working their way through this pandemic. Also, parents that are trying to cope with all of this and let's don't forget the children. They also have a challenge with all of this. New Year--New Word--Maddietude.

  Maddie                                                                                This year I have decided to have a new attitude toward life's many pleasures as well as life's many problems. I have been studying the attitude of this little girl for the last two years or so. She has a great attitude toward life. Of course, being just two and a half, she hasn't had too many trials and tribulations,  but when one arises she meets it with Maddietude. That's what I want.  I want Maddietude! You know, the kind where you give yourself permission to eat, while you're shopping. Or the kind of attitude that allows finding joy in watering flowers with your brand new unicorn water gun. The kind of attitude that gives you the gumption to pack up all the toys and leave. The kind of attitude that gives you the power to stop the birthday party proceedings to try on your new bright yellow gardening gloves. Or the attitude that says, "so what if it's a birthday party

One Word For a New Year

 It has taken me the whole first month of this new year to come up with my "one word" resolution.  I thought maybe "thankful" would be good. Or maybe "grateful." After all I have remained healthy for the last year. But, I wasn't totally on board with either. I even considered "plastics", but apparently you have to be over fifty to appreciate that one. I surmised this after offering that one word of advice to my eighteen year old great-nephew upon his high school graduation. In the past few years I have chosen pamper (myself), faith, two-week cleanse (technically more than one word) and for 2020 it was branch-out. Well, I don't have to tell you how that went.
